Jean (Lutri) Shafiroff Class of ’72 has spent many years in service to others, most certainly reverting back to the lessons she learned at Holy Trinity about benevolence and making service a life’s mission. She is actively involved as a volunteer fundraiser and leader of several New York City and Southampton charitable causes. Jean’s particular interests include charities related to women, health care, animals and the people of the cities she calls home.
Jean is very “hands-on” with the multiple causes she supports and that has proved successful. Wearing many hats as a board member, chairwoman, underwriter and hostess of numerous charity events, Jean, as the chairwoman of the Southampton Hospital Annual Summer Galas, raised $1.7 million, $2 million and $1.7 million, respectively over the past few years—not at all a small feat of accomplishment… Her other board memberships include The New York Women’s Foundation®, JBFCS, French Heritage Society, The Couture Council, Lighthouse International Advisory Board, Southampton Bath & Tennis Club’s Charitable Foundation and Honorary Board Member of the Southampton Animal Shelter. Next year, Jean will be a New York Mission Society 2014 Gala Honoree. She will continue to serve on all of the above mentioned boards and will co-chair, chair and host several events for various different charitable causes.
Each year Jean also hosts a number of other charity events for various causes. She is known for organizing and underwriting large luncheons in New York City to introduce individuals to different philanthropic causes, including for The New York Women’s Foundation®, featuring board president Diana L. Taylor. Jean has also hosted several large luncheons for Southampton Hospital and other local charities.
In tandem with her philanthropic responsibilities, Jean has also hosted events for the entertainment industry. In 2011, she held an event for Oscar winning actor Colin Firth prior to receiving his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star for The King’s Speech, and last year, a luncheon in association with The Weinstein Company for Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh for their film My Week With Marilyn. Jean also enjoys writing and has published articles in "Social Life" and "Gotham Magazine". She is passionate about style and fashion and was featured on "The Chic Index” and on "Hamptons Magazine" Best Dressed list in 2012.
Jean holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and a BS in physical therapy from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as having graduated from Holy Trinity. She has worked both in public finance and private partnerships on Wall Street. Prior to that, she was a physical therapist at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. Jean is married to Martin Shafiroff, an investment advisor, and together they have two daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth, who share their mother’s interest in charitable causes. Residing in New York City and Southampton, but one never to forget her roots, Jean recently said in a correspondence with alma mater, “I have very fond memories of my days at Holy Trinity.”
