Holy Trinity STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) consists of elective classes that complement students' full-year mathematics and lab science courses. Our STEM electives incorporates project-based learning and design thinking.  

Students write research papers and participate in STEM fairs across Long Island. Holy Trinity also hosts its own Science Fair every year for all students who would like the opportunity to highlight their research.

The coding languages Alice, Javascript, Python, and HTML/CSS are taught as well as MIT App Inventor
Holy Trinity participates in Hour of Code - a worldwide challenge issued by Code.org enticing students to write short snippets of code to achieve pre-specified goals. Last year, Edward Noble ('20) won the Congressional App Challenge for his district. He created an app that can easily translate Spanish to English and vice versa.

Holy Trinity STEM travels to several labs and research facilities across Long Island and NYC to gain hands-on experience in STEM fields. Last year, STEM traveled to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for a DNA fingerprinting lab, Northwell Health in Lake Success to tour their Core Robotics lab, and the New York Blood Center to participate in lectures on immunohematology.

STEM Courses:

EUREKA SCIENCE / MATH An introduction to S.T.E.M. Year- 1 credit

This course provides students with the opportunity for a rigorous science, technology, engineering, and mathematics course of study. Using a project-based instructional strategy this course will develop critical thinking skills as well as skills in communication and collaboration through experiments and by solving real world problems. Students will also be given the opportunity to use these skills to compete in various science and mathematics competitions. As part of the development of STEM skills, students will meet with professionals in each field and be introduced to careers in STEM related occupations. Prerequisite: Recommendation by a math and a science teacher.

EUREKA SCIENCE/MATH II- S.T.E.M Year - 1 credit

The second course offering in the study of S.T.E.M. continues to build on the skills needed in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through experimentation and observation, critical thinking skills as well as communication and collaboration skills will be developed. A project-based instructional approach will produce self-directed learners equipped to excel in the 21st century. Students will be given the opportunity to use these skills to compete in various science and mathematics competitions. Students will also meet with professionals in each field and be introduced to careers in STEM. Prerequisite: Recommendation by a math and a science teacher

TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN - S.T.E.M. III Semester - 1/2 credit

The culmination of our S.T.E.M. program, This course will focus on competitive science endeavors. Students will engage in advanced chemistry, anatomy, ecology, forensic science and engineering to enhance their self-study for their particular events. Students will also receive h ands on help in lab skills, building skills and experimental design to enrich their learning. The second half of the course is designed to give students the fundamental skills and concepts essential to scientific construction. Students learn the basic language of technical design through the use of CAD (computer aided drafting) using AutoCAD software. This mathematically driven aspect of the course is especially beneficial for students interested in careers related to production design, engineering, drafting, commercial art, graphic arts, and construction.

COMPUTER SCIENCE Semester - 1/2 credit

This course provides students the opportunity to learn computer programming skills starting in user friendly environments. These environments will include Scratch, Lego Mindstorms, and MIT App Inventor developed by MIT, as well as Alice, developed by Carnegie Mellon. Using a project-based instructional strategy, students will develop logical and critical thinking skills along with programming skills, creating games, movies, robots, and Android Apps. Students will then be exposed to creating code on their own using the languages of Java, Javascript, Python, HTML and CSS. They will learn web development as well as the syntax of programming languages (variables, conditionals, if-then etc.) to solve problems of increasing complexity.
