Leo is a junior at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, NY. He lives in Massapequa, NY with his parents and younger sister. He first became interested in politics through an unusual way-singing with his choir, The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York. Throughout elementary school and high school, Leo has participated in musical theatre and classical music.
The repertoire for his choir during his freshman year of high school focused on pieces that highlighted the struggles and challenges of refugees around the world. While performing these pieces in concert and internalizing their messages, he decided that he wanted to more fully participate in forming the policies in his school and community.
After realizing his interest in the political field, Leo interned for County Legislator Josh Lafazan, where he was one of the 40 interns who were selected to help run his reelection campaign, the first of any campaign that was run solely by students.
It was after the triumphant win of the Lafazan campaign that Leo realized the importance of inclusivity and diversity, something that is very personal to him because of his Hispanic background. Leo ran and was elected vice president of his class, and treasurer of the select choir at his high school.
This February, Leo accepted an internship for Melanie D’arrigo for Congress, where he is spearheading the student coalition, which will broaden into the entire district and create a platform for underrepresented teens to speak out about issues personal to them.
Leo’s main focus on creating platforms for those who are voiceless came to fruition when he volunteered at a veteran’s home. One veteran, in particular, said something that has become his personal mantra, "Remember that your civil right is your civic duty.” Leo continues to be heavily involved in political activism and hopes to major in political science in college.
